This blog summarizes the research paper reading tips introduced by Prof. Andrew Ng in the course Stanford CS230: Deep Learning.

Reading Paper Multiple Passes:

  1. Read the Title+Abstract+Figures
  2. Read the Intro + Conclusions + Figures (Again) + Skim Rest
  3. Read the paper, but skip/skim math
  4. Read the whole paper but skip the parts that don’t make sense.

Questions to Ask:

  1. What did the authors try to accomplish?
  2. What were the key elements of the approach?
  3. What can you use yourself?
  4. What other references do you want to follow?
